GRA&CcedilA KNYSNA OYSTER FESTIVAL MAGIC

The Garden Route will come alive from 6 to 15 July 2001 when the annual Graça Knysna Oyster Festival rolls into town. There will be talking, eating, drinking, laughing, singing and sharing during this 10-day outdoor and leisure adventure in South Africa's Town of the Year.

Festivities will cater to every taste and age, ranging from a Miss Sweetie Pie contest for the budding young ladies of tomorrow to the JC le Roux Pearl of Knysna Pageant for their more mature counterparts.

BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER

The Festival will open on Friday night, 6 July with the crowning of the 2001 JC le Roux Pearl of Knysna. Outer beauty will not be the only criteria for selection. Entrants will also need to demonstrate their talents as creative problem solvers and have an interest in the communities around them, as they will be working on the Knysna Litter Craft project during the year of their reign.

The evening promises to be breathtaking with a lagoon theme, which will be made possible through spectacular lighting and musical effects created by Sound Generation. They have handled such festivals as Oppikoppi and the Savanna Up the Creek Music Festival and are known for their innovative and top quality workmanship.

TEACH A MAN TO FISH

After the excitement of Friday night, keen fishermen will be able to indulge in entertainment of a different kind when they head out early on Saturday, 7 July 2001 in search of the BIG ONE at the Sedgwick's Old Brown Sherry Angling competition. Anglers will compete in a skins competition on Saturday and Sunday. This competition is the perfect activity for a group of friends who want to enjoy a good time and have some competitive fun.

I WANT TO RIDE MY BICYCLE

One of the sports highlights of the weekend is undoubtedly the Pick 'n Pay Rotary Cycle Tour on Sunday, 8 July. This annual race attracts a tremendous amount of support and with good reason. Good organisation and excellent safety precautions ensure that entrants enjoy the day in the company of cycling enthusiasts from around the country. Cyclists can enter a number of distances ranging from road races over 50km and 100km to the Forest Mountain Bike Races that range in distances from 15km and 38km to the invigorating 48km.

LET ME BOWL YOU OVER

Once the dust has settled after the hectic weekend, it is off to the Knysna and Leisure Isle Bowling greens on Monday, 9 July for the start of the Scottish Leader Bowls Tournament. This event draws teams from across South Africa and a long waiting list exists for this four-day tournament that pits the top men and women against each other in this refined sport.

LOOK ON THE LIGHT SIDE

If you want to look on the light side of life and enjoy top quality entertainment and comedians while supporting a good cause, then the Savanna Light Ladies night on Tuesday, 10 July will give you all of this and more.

There is however only one drawback: you have to be a woman and black is the dress code for the evening. This event has grown over the past three years to be one of the top functions of the festival. Ten eligible bachelors are auctioned off during the course of the evening and all funds raised are donated to the Phambili Refuge for Battered women and their children.

Savanna is known for it's quirky and light-hearted approach and as the experts in comedy entertainment will make sure that ladies go home with a smile on the face and a sparkle in the eye.

HIT ME BABY ONE MORE TIME

Last year the Hunter's Dry Hit Squad had Knysna on its knees with the vibrancy and energy of this dynamic team and this year will be no different. The team had a loyal following as they visited establishments around town. Look out for this promotional team at one of the Knysna restaurants and entertainment venues and stand the chance of winning stunning gear and items.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

On Wednesday, 11 July 2001 the best of the best battle it out for the title as Graça Oyster Cooking Champion of the Year. Chefs from restaurants, guesthouses and hotels in the Garden Route don their chef's hats and aprons for an unforgettable cook-off where more than 12 000 oysters will be prepared. Entrants are all members of the prestigious SA Chefs Association and oysters dishes of every shape, size and description will have guests lining up to sample the culinary delights. The event will be staged in the modern Knysna Quays and safe and secure parking will be available throughout the night. This event has been a sell-out success ever since its inception and tickets will be available from Computicket.

COMPETITION MANIA

If you really loooooooooove oysters then there is no better place to be than the Long Barn Tavern on Thursday, 12 July for the Graça Oyster Cooking Competition. Teams of two will compete for the dubious honour as Number One Oyster opener and eater. During the course of the evening a contestant can consume up to 60 oysters. This puts the aphrodisiac qualities of this little sea creature on a whole new level. Entrants will also be vying for a place in the Guinness Book of Records with their record attempt.

NATANIëL IS COMING TO TOWN

Top South African cabaret artist, Nataniël will be performing at the Graça Knysna Oyster Festival from Wednesday, 11 July to Saturday, 14 July. His shows at last year's festival was a sell-out success and he will be returning to the Garden of Eden with a brand new show which will include songs from his latest top production, Claude Bummel as well as music and stories from recent shows Eleven Ladies, Songs for the Soul and Doller as Kop-af. Along with a number of romantic cover songs and several original numbers as well as brand new stories and sketches by Nataniël in both English and Afrikaans, the Zonnebloem Dinner Theatre Experience with Nataniël is a must for connoisseurs. The evening will start with an intimate wine tasting of the superb Zonnebloem wines and guests will enjoy a sumptuous gourmet dinner before Nataniël takes to the stage. Tickets to the Zonnebloem Dinner Theatre Experience with Nataniël are limited and are available through Computicket.

KNYSNA QUAYS MARDI GRAS

The Knysna Quays Mardi Gras from 13 to 15 July 2001 will be presented by Southern Comfort, Jack Daniels and Red Bull. This event has become synonymous with an extraordinary mix of entertainment and pleasure in a majestic marina environment.

MUSICAL MOMENTS WITH Kfm 94.5

The activities are endless and young and old will find something to do, whether you indulge in strenuous sporting activities or just stroll along the myriad of shops. Kfm 94.5 will be doing an outside broadcast during the festival and will provide the best hits and memories with their unique mix of music from the golden oldies to the latest top 10 hits.
